What do you think about while running?

Hi again!  Hope your weekend is going well.  I've been busy, busy, busy, but it's been a good weekend.  It just has gone far too quickly.   Want to see some super cuteness? Of course you do.  RunnerSis sent me this picture yesterday:
How cute is runnerbaby?!   She's wearing the future runner shirt I got her, running shoes, and super cute nike tempo shorts.  She's so ready to start running :)

RunnerBro had to work today, so he didn't join us this morning for our run.  Ryan drove separate from me because I had 14 on my schedule and his IT band was  bugging him the other day, so he didn't want to push it if it felt bad.

Since both he and RunnerSis were running a much shorter distance than me and were going to leave before I got back, we took our picture  before the run.

eeek, not our best look.  They called it our floating heads look.

It was pretty chilly today and windy again.  Even with my gloves on, my hands were cold at first.   Ryan said his legs were feeling pretty good, so he opted to run the first 4 miles with me at my target pace.   Those first 4 miles went swimmingly and we stayed right where we wanted to be...though a few times I got overzealous and had to tell myself to 'slow my roll.'   I was feeling extra peppy today and since Ryan was ipod-less, I crooned to him the songs that I was listening to.  He was not a fan.  At all.  In fact, he threatened never to run with me again.  Party pooper.

At the 4 mile mark, I gave him one of my honey stingers, took one myself, wished each other luck and he headed back as I trekked on.

I was feeling good until right around the 5 mile mark I noticed my ipod was being wonky and kept playing the same 10 songs on loop.  I tried to fix it while running, but it didn't work, so I paused the garmin, stopped for a second and fixed it.   It did this one more time before the 6 mile mark before it finally behaved.

Since I was on my own, I let my mind wander as it usually does while I'm running.  I either think nothing or have a million thoughts at once going on in my head.   Here's a look at what my thoughts were like today:

-MMM, I want waffles

-What the heck is going on with my ipod?

-Why is my water bottle leaking?

-Seriously, this is NOT going to be enough water to get me back

-Ooh, I hope I don't have to go potty on this run.

-I think I have to go potty.  Oh wait, no, my stomach was just being weird for a second.

-I still want waffles

-I love this song!

-Wow, the sky looks so pretty right now.

-This hill seemed less big before

-Seriously, I really want waffles

-Oh look, horses!  I should take a picture..Oh, that didn't work.

-Hey, there's runnersis in her car!  Hi RunnerSis!  Oh..that means she's done.

-I need more water.  Stupid water bottle.

-Okay, about those waffles.   I REALLLLLLYYY could go for some right now.

-Hey look, I'm almost done.

-Holy crap!  I'm going to run these 14 miles in roughly the same time it took me to run 13.1 last week.

-Ahhhhh I'm done!

-Now, about those waffles.  Oh, and water.  MMMM.

This seemed appropriate for me today:
yes, this was exactly how my thought process goes.

And check out that time, which felt nice and easy (mostly):
I even hit the 13.1 mark at 2:03.36 which is 3 minutes faster than my freep 1/2 marathon time and only 4 minutes slower than my best time.  I totally smell a 1/2 PR in my future.  I felt so good that I almost considered doing 15, but didn't want to push it too much.

And no, I didn't get any waffles after :(  I wanted them so badly, but I stopped at my parents after and by the time I got home, Ryan was begging for lunch, not breakfast.  We got a big box of the frozen kind at the store today though and I plan to make that my breakfast tomorrow.  Yum!

No worries, because I got the girl scout cookies I ordered today:
mmmmmm.

By the way, don't forget to send me any great accomplishments for the month of february for Operation Hardcore Fit!  I'll post it on March 1st.

Oh, ps, today's distance?  It was a personal distance record for me, wahoo!

Let's talk,

-What foods do you crave when you're running?

-What does your thought pattern look like?  Are your thoughts all over or is your mind blank?

-Favorite girl scout cookie?  The tagalongs are for me and the thin mints are for ryan.

-How was your weekend?  Do anything fun?

  1. I don't usually want to eat until after I'm done runnin'.

As for my thought pattern, I try to keep my mind pretty blank or on running itself. I really don't want to think about work and will try to pop anything into my brain to get any work thoughts out.

Samosas and Thin Mints are the best!

Watched my boy play flag football yesterday. He is so polite and so not aggressive that we need to tell him it is OK to go fast, push a little, etc.

    I answered all the questions!

  2. Congrats on a new PDR! Thin Mints all the way for me - so delicious!
    :)

  3. 14 miles woohoo! I tend to clear my mind, especially on long runs...aka I talk to myself...A LOT...and often about what I'm observing. I also do the countdown and calculations in my brain...which never come out right!

  4. Thin! Mints! Thin! Mints!

14 miles in 2:12???? That's faster than my 13.1 PR! You are awesome! Love all the random thoughts! Can't remember all my random thoughts during my run today, other than "my legs arent' ok; I should stop...Oh, they're ok; I'll keep going...oh, not ok? Shorter steps...they're ok...maybe longer steps? Are they ok? Just keep going"

  5. Love the list of random thoughts! Congrats on the 14 miles! I did 4 miles on the treadmill today and felt great. Going for 5 next time :)

I happened to notice the Larabars today when I passed by them so I picked a couple up to try them. I thought, if Megan likes them, they have to be good, right? I ate the Peanut Butter and Jelly one on the way home from the store and I am definitely a fan. I actually wanted more when it was gone :) Usually with those types of things I am just trying to get it down!

Samoas for me. And I think I've told you this before but I make homemade tagalongs all the time. They are so easy and everyone always says they are better. Let me know if you want the "recipe" :)

  6. You are too funny!! My favorite girl scout cookies are the do-si-dos!

My thoughts are pretty much all over the place, too, but with a deep concentration on my classroom. I mean I can rearrange my entire classroom 4 or 5 times in my 3 miles! :)

Of course today, my thoughts were just to get up the blank hills!!! By the way, I just ran my 1st 5k yesterday! Woohoo! :)

  7. Mmm... waffles. I think Aaron and I are going to buy a waffle iron (FINALLY!) this week so I can make us waffles on the weekends... because waffles are so much better than pancakes. Yumm. :)

  8. You can have the thin mints but I want the Tagalongs!! Something about peanut butter and chocolate!

Other than my ADHD brain that goes through a million different topics, I think about pancakes a lot when I run. Or at least my weekend long run because it's early in the morning. We have a few places in town that have the best pancakes and they are by places I run.

    1. I also have ADHD - super glad I found running or I'd just about die. Isn't it great on long runs when you forget you're even running ;)

  11. Haha, I love the random thoughts. My thoughts yesterday started with how my fingers were cold, how the wind seemed worse once I started running, then how I was hot and wish I didn't wear so much, I felt like I was going slow and it was taking too much effort, how it was pretty out, and most of all, I had the choruses of a couple songs pop into my head a bunch of times. I usually don't wear my iPod when I'm running outside, so I end up singing songs in my head, but usually just the same ones and only the choruses and it gets annoying. :)

Have you seen this video about thoughts that go through your head through a marathon? It's pretty fitting for this post!

  12. My mind can jump all over the place but no, ironically, I never thought of food but probably will now.

Typically I go through the stressors of my life, work through emotions, think of races, envision me running and doing well in a race, "dancing" to good tunes when they come on, question "bad" tunes and why I added them to my playlist at times, tell myself I am going to revamp my playlist when I get home (which I haven't done and been telling myself this for months).

  13. Now I want waffles! Ha ha :) Congrats on an awesome run, you are doing so great! My mind always wonders on my runs!

  14. Congratulations again on your distance PR, and on it flowing so smoothly...I just love it when runs go that way. :-)

I too will either just free-associate during the run, or seem to sort of zone out. It can actually get a bit weird at times. I've not only had runs where I have absolutely no memory of running three or four of the miles, but I also sort of "woke up" (that's how it felt) in the middle of a run, and wasn't even sure that I had been running the entire time...it felt like I might have walking. I had to check RunKeeper on my phone to tell that I hadn't even slowed.

  15. What an awesome run! Great job!!

You know how people make pretzel necklaces when they go to beer fests? You should have a waffle necklace waiting for you at the ends of your runs and especially at the end of the marathon. Id so be jealous if i saw someone walking around with a waffle necklace.

  16. Awesome run! Way to dominate those 14 miles! Waffles with peanut butter is the best. thing. ever! Have you read What I talk About When I Talk About Running? I have it right now but haven't read it yet, but your thoughts while running reminded me of that book.

  17. I just thought of a fun waffles song for you! You must check this out, though I have to warn you that it's very catchy and I hope you don't get it stuck in your head while you're running. ;)

  18. I think about a lot of stuff when I am running. Sometimes it is "WTF am I doing?!" or sometimes it's just random thoughts that I barely remember when I am done. If I am hungry and I am thinking about food I can crave about anything until I am finished and then I am usually never hungry.

  19. My thoughts today: There was a farmer had a dog and Bingo was his name-o... So profound! Guess it's better than 99 bottles...

I usually don't crave any food while I'm running, but I sure do when I get home. Thin mints have to top my GS cookie list.

Now, if you haven't already seen this video about marathon thoughts, you're in for a treat: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NsMw10KVVCk&feature=youtu.be

Finally, my big accomplishment for February was the Berry Half Marathon on 2/18 in Rome, GA. I exceeded even my super-optimistic goal. My official time was 1:45:54, a definite PR!! I blogged about it, if you want details: http://www.runnermomgail.blogspot.com/2012/02/berry-half-marathon-success-story.html.

  20. Great job again on the run!
I am always thinking about having a Diet Coke when running! And recently I've been craving sweets which is weird for me!

My mind totally wanders when I run - trying to keep myself distracted :)

Favorite flavor is Samoas - YUMM!!!
